When I was... What, 8? I tried making a forum using a website quite similar to this... In fact, I'm pretty sure it was the exact same.
And I can tell you this: most of these smileys come packaged with the forum.
Honestly though, I don't feel the need for more smileys. I usually think smileys are distracting, and if I need to be more expressive I'll simply go to google and embed an image of my liking.
Or maybe even make my own! (I made my own avatar in case you couldn't notice ;) )
However, it would be quite fun to have, say, the whole standard model drawn by Andy!

Robly raises a good point of not wanting things to get too cluttered -- if I recall, after I introduced t :He :Higgs icon t :Hings got a little toug to read for a w :Hile 
But that didn't really end up being a permanent thing, we use them a little more subtly now.
Before I go and do it, though, I'm interested to hear from other forum users about what they think.
