Gluon charges

Post by 19683 » Wed Apr 06, 2016 5:27 pm

Why do gluons have 8 charges and not 9? It seems like there should be 9 combinations of colors and anti-colors. I know it has something to do with group theory, but can anyone explain it in a simple way?
Binomial Theorem: ((a+b)^n)= sum k=0->k=n((n!(a^(n-k))(b^k))/(k!(n-k)!))
