If you click Ptolemy on one of the stars, you'll eventually get a spirograph. If you click Track It on one of them you can see and endless repetition of the numbers 2, 9 and 3.

Hey Lasercat, welcome -- thanks for sharing!

Here's a slightly modified version of your code (which I centered on their starting point... instead of their ending point :) )

Code: Select all

Gravity Fun at TestTubeGames.com: [ForceGr: r^(-2),Qual: 1,Zoom: 1,xSet: 0,ySet: -0], [x0: 20,y0: 50,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 1000,c: 4], [x0: 52.5,y0: 40,vx: -1.6,vy: 4.03,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 1000,c: 4]
I've been posting a lot about spirals and such in the blog -- been on my brain -- and look at this, you bring in a new one! So my question for you (or others)... why does your example spiral? What's going on?

For the first use 10 (I think) as the speed of light, and for the second, use 2.

Ahh, it's so CUTE!

Code: Select all

Gravity Fun at TestTubeGames.com: [ForceGr: r^(-2),Qual: 1,Zoom: 5.306336,xSet: -69.82347,ySet: -97.1174], [x0: 91.40017,y0: 97.05379,vx: -0.09,vy: 2.31,t0: 0,who: 3,m: 0,c: 0], [x0: 70,y0: 97.5,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 4,m: 100,c: 1,d: 1000000]
Also, play this at ten times:

Code: Select all

Gravity Fun at TestTubeGames.com: [ForceGr: r^(-2),Qual: 1,Zoom: 1,xSet: 0,ySet: 0], [x0: 0,y0: 250,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 240,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 230,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 220,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 210,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 200,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 190,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 180,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 170,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 160,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 150,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 140,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 130,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 120,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 110,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 100,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 90,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 80.00001,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 70.00001,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 60,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 50,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 40.00001,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 30.00001,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 20.00001,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 10.00001,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: 5.587935E-06,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -9.999994,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -19.99999,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -29.99999,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -39.99999,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -49.99999,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -60,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -69.99999,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -79.99999,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -89.99999,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -99.99999,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -110,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -120,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -130,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -140,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -150,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -160,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -170,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -180,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -190,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -200,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -210,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -220,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -230,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2], [x0: 0,y0: -240,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 2,m: 5,c: 2]

I put two regular stars 125u apart, then put a 40u-mass planet near them, with a random initial velocity. Then, before hitting play, I hit Ptolemy on the left star so the system wouldn't go offscreen. A while later...

Apparently no one shares their art anymore. That's a shame. Take a look at the pattern I just made:

I started from the Orbit example, then deleted the three asteroids closest to the star. Then I ran the setup with a tan(r^2) force law.

Nice - a flower! As I've been working on the sim, I've been getting distracted... a lot... by what cool things I can make. So let me share a couple here!

Given today's delayed launch of Orion, I figured I'd simulate it's flight plan... so we can see what to expect of this mission that can bring us one step closer to mars. Highly accurate, of course.

This one was fun: I made a ring of asteroids and then removed the central star, they had a nice geometric path to them.

And then my personal favorite -- an attempt at a bit of moving-poetry. Load it up, then sit and wait.

If you leave the zoom the same, the words spell out this:

Code: Select all

A Wise Man Once Said Welcome To Earth.
But then the objects come back in and read this (doesn't make much sense):

Code: Select all

Once Said Welcome Said Welcome Said Once Welcome Earth Welcome Said Welcome Said Welcome Earth Said Said
As you can see, the asteroid named "Said" is the last surviving moving object. The whole sim lasts until t=2431.
I LOVE your Gravity Simulator! :)

Deep isn't it?

Well, no. I think it'd be cool if they spelled out something different with the same words re-entering in a different order (yet not be just nonsense). Alas, I didn't get that far.

I mean... it's art. If you don't get it -- it doesn't get you. (Was *that* deep?)

Code: Select all

Gravity Fun at TestTubeGames.com: [ForceGr: 1/(sqrt(abs(r-1))+1)+abs(ln(r))/r^2,Zoom: 0.25,xSet: 0,ySet: 0], [x0: 100,y0: 0,vx: 0,vy: 9.11,t0: 0,who: 3,m: 0,c: 2], [x0: 100,y0: 0,vx: 0,vy: -4,t0: 0,who: 3,m: 0,c: 6], [x0: 0,y0: 0,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 4,m: 1600,c: 1], [x0: -1000,y0: 0,vx: 0,vy: -7.39,t0: 0,who: 4,m: 400,c: 1]
Select the primary star, Lagrange with the second star, and watch the blue asteroid. It seems to be in a perfect 7:5 resonance with the secondary star. The red asteroid is close to a 5:1 resonance, although its orbit is mostly circular.

Here's another version with the red asteroid opposite the blue one, with the same velocity:

Code: Select all

Gravity Fun at TestTubeGames.com: [ForceGr: 1/(sqrt(abs(r-1))+1)+abs(ln(r))/r^2,Zoom: 0.25,xSet: 0,ySet: 0], [x0: 100,y0: 0,vx: 0,vy: 9.11,t0: 0,who: 3,m: 0,c: 2], [x0: -100,y0: 0,vx: 0,vy: -9.11,t0: 0,who: 3,m: 0,c: 6], [x0: 0,y0: 0,vx: 0,vy: 0,t0: 0,who: 4,m: 1600,c: 1], [x0: -1000,y0: 0,vx: 0,vy: -7.39,t0: 0,who: 4,m: 400,c: 1]
The red object has a different resonance (10:3).
I LOVE your Gravity Simulator! :)
