Minimum zoom and maximum sim speed, what are the limits?

Post by FleetFoot »

After loading the Solar System as a starting point, I don't seem to be able to zoom below "x0.01", just enough to get the Sun and Neptune (at 30AU) on the same screen. [Edit] I've just found in the help it says the limit is x0.01 for the free version or x0.005 for the full version, I'd need something like x0.000002. [Edit]

I'm interested in modelling the effect of a hypothetical "planet 9" on Neptune at perihelion and a handful of Oort Cloud bodies near aphelion. It would have a maximum aphelion of the order of 1000AU or perhaps up to 1500AU for the orbit proposed by Gomes.

The maximum sim speed would be an issue too as the period could 30 thousand years. The current setting for "Time speed" goes up to 100 (but that has the Earth orbiting in a few seconds so I guess it's not just a multiplier on real time). I would need something like 1,000,000 to run the sim in reasonable speed or perhaps 10,000 leaving it overnight. I suspect the accuracy would be OK though as the bodies are always far apart.

With a bit of work, it would be brilliant to model this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet_Ni ... w-new3.png

Or make a GIF like this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet_Ni ... mation.gif

Sounds like the full version would be right for you -- not only are the ranges increased (for zooming and time speed, which can range from x.01 to x10,000), but there are other unit-systems that could be helpful. That way you might not have to wait as long to run your simulation.
